How Katrina Plays
Write Act Rep’s 2009 season, our 11th season, continues with acclaimed playwright Judi Ann Mason’s dramatic piece How Katrina Plays. This multi-media docu-play is a compilation of dramatic stories about Hurricane Katrina. These stories were documented through letters, emails, phone calls, newspaper articles and personal family accounts of what has been termed the storm of the century. How Katrina Plays is dedicated to Judi Ann Mason's brother, BJ Mason, who died helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina. This is not only BJ Mason's story, but the story of a national calamity. We commemorate the bravery of those involved, observe their sacrifice, and try to understand, through their stories. On the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina Weekend, Write Act Rep offers a special sneak preview of How Katrina Plays with a live Art Auction and Live Entertainment.
Judi Ann Mason, whose precocious success as a playwright brought her to network television as one of the first female African-American sitcom writers and one of the youngest television writers of any race or either sex, died on July 8 in Los Angeles, after attending the final callbacks for the production of How Katrina Plays. She was 54.
Due to the style of this play and its impact on our community as fellow artists and humanitarians, with your help we can bring Judi Ann Mason's vision to fruition and successfully mount our show to benefit two Katrina Charities. We have a Gala Benefit performing Friday and Saturday night, August 28th and 29th, 2009 with an art auction prior to and following each performance. 100% of the art auction monies raised from the Gala will go to support the people of Katrina through two local charities; The Make It Right Foundation, and Sweet Home New Orleans. In addition, we plan to give a percentage of the box office profits from the six week production back to the community in New Orleans to help rebuild and service its residents’ recovery from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
